By GadgetGuy
This is actually my 2nd Synology. I had previously bought a Synology DS412+. I wanted this 2nd one as a standby backup which has worked out great. I initially just wanted to centralize a video server for home. But after understanding everything a Synology box can do, it is now my mail server handling several accounts, is my web server with more than 5 domains, monitor's my house with "5" 1024x768 camera's. It serves up audio books to my iphone and ipad. So who need's an apple cloud? Not me!Setup is incredibly simple, just power it up, hook it up to your router. Run a small utility to find your NAS on the net and then you can load up the os and partition the drive from your favorite web browser. Then you can go to the actual NAS control panel from your browser. Enable the windows file system. Create a user, make some shared folders, and now you reach it from all your windows systems. Turn on mac file service and it will be reachable by your mac mini's and powerbooks. Turn on AudioStation or Filestation and its reachable by your iphone and ipad. Install the Plex package (in the control panel) and even your (modern)TV will see your movies through DLNA. You don't need to know a thing about linux because the control panel is completely graphical and idiot proof. If you use green drives, it doesn't make a sound. You can even tell it to turn on and off at certain hours and days. And it NEVER screws up! It is has been extremely reliable the entire time.Technically it is supposed to be a NAS box, but I view it as a centralized "always on" computer that you can use to handle everything you can dream up. What I am really impressed about is with all this it is also a world class surveillance system. I have it setup to run 5 HD IP camera's with motion detection and keeps all of this nicely sorted in a graphical timeline it has been working like a champ. You can even tell it to send you an email or a text message to your iPhone if it detects motion. It will even send you a picture of the culprit with the email! Oh yea, did I forget to tell you it makes an awesome NAS storage box? :)Well it works so well I started worrying about all my eggs in one basket. You should realize that having so much on one machine is a blessing and a curse because if you lose it you lose everything. My second one automatically turns on once a day performs a time machine sync, then turns off. And If my primary Synology box goes down, the 2nd one is ready to take over while I bring the other one back up.I was expecting pretty poor performance on this 2nd one, but was blown away that I actually can't tell the difference between my big Synology and this one. It's drawback is that it capable of only one drive thus no raid. But heck! I can literally change out the drives now since at any one time one box is always up. So I have in a way the most reliable way to avoid down time or loss of data.So Synology guys congratulations on an incredible job! But I do have a wish. The Synology box is completely capable of also being a super firewall/router, and I see you have even the ability to plugin a wifi into the USB for a hotspot. But why haven't you taken the extra step and put a 2nd nic on the box to allow it to become a Wireless access point/Router? You don't even have to write the router code. Just use PFSense, Untangle, smoothwall as a package. I think currently these are stand-alone builds. But you can convince them to make them into a installer package for your box. Since the synology box is always on and so is the router. Why not combine this? The Synology box would become a super router. It would replace firewall routers that cost thousands of dollars. If you do this it would be revolutionary because then the NAS box could load up entire country IP block codes. Block Spammer domains since your the mail server the box can gather the spam ip's at night and block later (with the user determining which is which). And upload peerblock block lists made by users.I would toss out every router I have at work and at home and buy a new Synology box just for this one feature! Please Synology get PFSense on your NAS!

By F. White
Originally I purchased the DS112j and really liked the ease of operation and setup. The UI was super nice and easy to navigate through. The main reason for a N.A.S. to begin with was I wanted my own Cloud (CloudStation) for safety and security.....I love Dropbox but really couldn't put my files on DB because I didn't trust the security of my personnel data. With my own Cloud I don't have to worry, as long as I ensure it's safe. BTW, CloudStation is super FAST and works on LAN or WAN.So, I decided I wanted to upgrade to a faster processor and more RAM therefore I returned the DS112j (the DS112j was having hibernation problems) and purchased the DS112 (no hibernation problems). Now I figure because of the processor and RAM upgrade the sky is the limit on what this little N.A.S. can do. I haven't tried all the functions of the DS112, like I said I was more interested in the Cloud sync. I have 3 Apple laptops (wife's and my 2) and I now don't have to worry about knowing if my documents are up to date and now whenever a new document is created it's sync'ed on all my computers. I also have a few databases that sync, the only caveat is I have to have them in a disk image which isn't a problem at all.I told my wife the other day that the Synology DS112 is one of the best purchases I've made in quite a while.I purchase 2 of the WD Green 2TB EARX model hard drives, one as a backup. The drives are super quiet and very fast....not as fast as my SSD drives in my laptops though. I think these drives have gotten a bad rap for whatever reasons but I really feel there dependable and will be durable in the long haul. Right now I'm only using about 430GB's so I have plenty of room to grow.I highly recommend the DS112 and anyone on the fence and have Apple computers jump down and get it, you won't be disappointed.

Correction: Plex now runs on this device, but not as well as if you ran the Plex server from a more robust pc or server. For example, transcoding video is not supported.Others reviewed this product and call it "easy". Maybe it's easy compared to other servers, but I wouldn't call it easy. It's not hard either. If you don't mind googling for help you can find an answer to any question you might have. The synology site is extremely helpful, with video and text tutorials and a tremendous user forum. The web based server interface is very clean, and the device is amazingly robust given how spare its resources are. Currently I have an old 500gb green drive in the server and two portable drives connected to the usb3 ports - 1 for time machine and the other to back up the internal drive.Right now all my music is on it, as are my photos and home videos. My family now has access to all our pix and videos on their various devices, whether on the home lan or outside on a cell network. I can ftp and webdav to my files from remote locations. I can even create private photo folders to share certain pix with relatives, and give them secure access to the files via https.I haven't set up the mail or web server features but its nice to know they are there if I get around to it.A couple of things to watch out for: This is a low powered device and is not compatible with all the programs that run on synology servers. For example, Plex can't run on it. If you want a server that can run every software package synolgoy offers, consult their website for compatibility. Also, the server has a router set-up wizard. But the wizard doesn't work with all routers. Mine is a netgear wndr3400 that's incompatible with the wizard. It's not that big a deal, I just used the router's menu to open the appropriate ports manually.I am thrilled with this little server. But I recommend that you spend some time on the synology web site before buying one, to make sure you understand whether this device meets your expectations.
